Victor Mendoza – Salty Noodles – Loudeast Records

Peanuts or Noodles the word salt occupies a significant place at the heart of the music. Either way Victor Mendoza’s consumption and celebration of all things wonderful plays like a beautiful, teasing cooperation of keys, drums, bass and horns alongside signature Vibraphone which blasts and punctuates the swinging rhythm section to perfection. What’s not love about this? As the Latin vibes then evaporate towards the reach of summertime Nacho Marco’s remix proves to be all the more remarkable transforming the original into a fiery, fusion of Detroit ignited Techno of the sterling, funky, musical variety.

Single of the Week

Nacho Marco/ Roberto Rodriguez
That Smile/ Giving It All
Lazy Days Recordings

Celebrating ten years of almost anything these days is, of course, cause for celebration and this two track release continues with the second of the cumulative 10 by Ten series. Beginning with the aptly titled That Smile and Nacho Marco’s soulfully charged Acid grooves, which prove to be almost too hot to handle, this emotive seven plus minutes juxtaposes intense 303 attitudes alongside cool piano notes and feels refreshingly excellent. Next, Giving It All delivers deliciously wonky basslines amid undulating funkiness in the shape of effected keys and percussion, which increase energy levels as the production unfolds with the later introduction of vocals only fuelling the fire.

Nicuri
Orbital Chords
Growin Music

growinI get the sense that this isn’t so much good as great. Partly because it thinks outside of the box as something imagined on its own terms, not for cynicism. Three equally challenging pieces of music co-exist to form this debut release from (the mysterious) Growin Music starting out with the unpredictably beautiful Holding The Four Winds. Underscored by rough edged Techno beats it’s the swirling, soaring synthesisers that captivate the attention and feel little short of epic. Digital Crush, continues the theme again scoring high on atmosphere this time punctuated by drum hits and meandering percussion, leaving the excellent Walks On The Boulevard to finish on classy Deep House tones and a more traditionally executed arrangement of sounds.

Marsupials & Marcus Raute
Together EP
Large Music

largeNaples based collective Marsupials and London’s Marcus Raute join minds to deliver four addictive slices of House for your pleasure via the always impressive Large Music imprint. The tough-edged title track takes centre stage with gritty beats and organ lines feeling increasingly intense as the addition of punchy stabs and vocal touches furnish the arrangement with all the necessary soul required. The Dub version then proceeds to strip it all back to basics revealing its deeper essence. Unless You Play picks up the pace next with brighter keys and sizzling hi-hats, while the 90’s inspired I Don’t Want You ends with yet more soulful vocals and biting organ hits feeling frisky and funky.

Nacho Marco
You Got To Know EP
Madhouse

Valencia’s Nacho Marco delivers three equally cutting tracks for the Madhouse imprint. Starting with the EP’s title which combines fiery off-beat snares and deep bass, along with emotive pads plus synths that all go to tick the big time production box. Love the intensity here which is only fuelled by the held String line towards the end, that and the rousing vocals. Meanwhile, Time supplies more in the way of shuffling rhythms alongside snappy percussion and moody Organ. Leaving, Middays to end in style with sassy Rimshots and delicious 90’s styled keys recreating the perfect atmosphere to complete this great EP.

Krankbrother
Electric Lucifer EP
DFTD

Having recently reviewed their stunning Recollective compilation the duo now release three tracks of their own. And they couldn’t be more appropriate to reflect that album’s variation of sound with each number feeling equally different to the next. The led track, Electric Lucifer drives the vocal into distraction over smouldering beats and Organ accompanied by splashing rush of drums. Thank You Baby, sees Disco-esque inspired keys and sassy percussion feel infectious as the chorus works its way into into the arrangement. With the excellent Big Mo ending on an 80’s note with funky syncopated bass and spacey sound effects sounding very Euro-Discotheque and frankly irresistible.

Eiskaltes Haendchen
Regular Funk Crusher EP
Van Liebling Rec

The most pounding release this week certainly goes to Eiskaltes Haendchen whose excellent percussion fuelled Inflate is hard to beat. It’s a great combination of Latin drums and classic Chicago House that truly fire up the senses when combined with its hypnotic musical loop and pulsating Acid bass. Through, then proceeds to work Detroit electronics into the equation while still retaining the drums funky edge amid the smoky vocal edits.

Wankelmut
Wankelmoods Vol.2
Get Physical

Volume Two sounds like the kind of nightclub you could enjoy yourself in. Opening with Ricoshei’s delicately poised ‘Perfect Like You’ and Ian Pooley’s haunting ‘Kids play’ sets the scene for the first ten minutes. Things then step up a gear traversing more progressive electronic sounds before hitting the deeper atmosphere’s of Wankelmut’s own excellent ‘Wood & Wine’. And it’s a that point that music gets seriously involving with contributions from the likes of Adriatique’s disturbingly brilliant ‘Midnight Walking’ and the Siopis remix of Climbers dark masterpiece ‘It’s All I Need’. Neatly ending on Wasted So Much Time feat. John LaMonica is Wankelmut’s new single and again showcases another variation to this compilation.
