Tom Flynn feat. Amp Fiddler – The Future – DIRTYBIRD

A stunning release to polish off the year with. DIRTYBIRD pull out all stops with this resilient, piano led number that is all at once beautifully jazzy, and yet rolling with a tough undercurrent underpinned by Amp Fiddler’s spoken message exonerating the future tense. Excellent, provocative music – the way it always should be. The remix comes from label-head Claude VonStroke who adds extra punch to the production alongside brighter expectations, which accompany the sizzling arrangement of fiery dub effects and infectious rhythms perfectly.

Tom Flynn – Pluck – Dessous Recordings

One of the attributes that shines through from Pluck is its defining ability to sound so refreshing, especially given the slew of familiar sounding releases which are ever present these days. The production carves out its own niche successfully exciting combinations of playful, synthesized melodies and rolling, provocative rhythms to ignite the senses. There is also a funky sense of time and space at play here too, something so often missing from the formula numbers around. The tougher, resolutely heavy-duty Sunday Morning Session hits next via brutal kick drums accompanied by unfurling waves of sound suggesting moodier ideas and notation. Leaving the punchier beats and bass featured on, Off The Road to end pointing in the direction of the spirit of adventure as caustic keys apply the science of sound to heated equations.

Tom Flynn
‘Argentina EP’
Circus Recordings

The bad news is, its September. The good, well play this. Argentina spells carnival in bold letters as the title track displays Latino flair in abundance. Repeated guitar chords, crowd sounds and a big thumping drum beat. It’s that simple and yet that effective.  The intriguing Tiger Square, then pins together a selection of off-kilter ideas which really shouldn’t work together but somehow do, pitching a selection of cut-up voices and bizarre organ notes against a feast of punchy percussion. The sun is still shinning, really it is. 8
