Greg Fenton reviews worriedaboutsatan – No Knock No Doorbell

Certain types of music feel invigorating. Like celebrating joy or pain, but with a vigour that seems like evolution, a process of change or chance, rather than merely cutting up the past and replacing the pieces as light entertainment.

Gavin Miller’s beautifully crafted music often sparkles with shimmering guitars and mind-expanding synthesisers swirling through the spectrum of emotion. Sometimes paired with the precise drive of skilled drumming, each track on this latest album resonates with firm intention, as intended. Absorb the intense energy of Before Your Eyes (We Are Your Ancestors) before the composition dissolves into a sea of breathy ambience, a release that satisfies nearly ten minutes of vibrant moments.

Unusual synthesizers appear on the compelling We Talk About It Often, while the six-string work is tearfully evident on the haunting Inside A Dream I: What Year Is This? Similarly, the sheer daring of atmosphere is explored within the beautiful melancholy of Icelandic Hardcore, although it may be more about a journey through passages. Occasionally, influences become clearly felt, and you can find those for yourself, but this album is full of sequences that offer a life-enhancing experience in various forms throughout this celebratory 20th anniversary album.
