Sometimes music just feels important like its meant to be. There is an innate quality contained within Lady Blackbird’s smouldering vocal which ignites that flame, and sense of itself within time and history. Certain reference points are inevitable when you listen but this also feels particularly refreshing in 2020 as the organic power of voice and its accompaniment testify. The Foremost Poets versions are exceptional, pulsing with deep refrain that fully charges the senses. Or, there is the reflective swing of the Emma-Jean Thackray remix, or of course the eloquent Jazz of the original which simply is. And then some.
