Greg Fenton reviews The 7:45s – The Way That I Love You – LRK Records
Given that music is an art form, I’m beginning 2025 with a question: Is it more important for music to reflect the temperature of what is happening in the world surrounding us, channelling emotion alongside the radical spark of the creative process? Or is it more meaningful to soak up the ready-tested nostalgic sounds of the past, acting as a realignment, a return to more natural sources? Perhaps the answer sits somewhere in between everything.
That said The 7:45s bath the soul with an exploration of heartbreak at the unenviable prospect of unrequited love. Dipped in a warm wash of classic, traditionally soulful sounds this remains music causing you to swoon in a rush of romantic knowing. Capturing and reacquainting the heart care of that beautiful feeling of being musically uplifting and conversely, lyrically melancholic in self-defining ways which sixties/ early seventies soul achieved so effortlessly. Horns blast, drums roll and rhythms float to highlight Martin Connor’s sensual yet rousing vocals while celebrating the task of living life in difficult circumstances.
