Greg Fenton reviews Almøst Silent – Kaizen – Past Inside The Present
A tale of unease and uncertainty. Despite the tension, suggested relief and a sense of positive purpose drift throughout the music as Bright Light captures illumination and a broader spectrum of feeling. Kaizen is a powerful and wonderful listen, blending modern sensibilities from ambient and dub techno to convey a future pulse of musical dichotomy. Try the elegant intensity of Tough Things next in the sequence, haunted by Detroit stabs yet soothing the brutal with warm, ethereal pads and expanding bliss.
There’s a strong sense of musicality throughout the album, which, as I’ve mentioned before, raises the compositions to a distinct level. It also adds depth and richness to the overall experience and the conversation around it. Try the swoon of Dust. Similarly, the uplifting Reconstructed carries a subtle echo of piano, expressing distance and reflection. Minset is exceptional, deliberately traditional in many ways, speaking in the language of life’s notes. Legacy leaves the release with a lasting impression of drumming and more sombre atmospheres, hinting that something might not be quite right. Only time will tell.
