Greg Fenton reviews Anne Chris Bakker – Thinking an Ocean – Driftworks
Actions speak louder than words – how true is that today? Anne Chris Bakker’s beautiful poise between action and relief suspends moments, uprooting and upending them across a sonic journey of quietly immense proportions. Each layer of sound is eloquent and purposeful, hitting its intended, often serene, soft target, yet more often than not is energised by a thoughtful, reflective melancholy that speaks to the intensity of the world.
This is a brilliant series of compositions that feel deeply involving, like hidden messages transmitted one-to-one through the air. It’s an album’s worth of material that merits your full attention as its details unfold over its lifespan. It doesn’t signify the rush of individual pleasures, but rather presents a whole contemplation to you throughout.
To use another metaphor: Beauty in simplicity, as sounds swirl around each other, gently forming patterns and pictures in the mind. A floating sea of repetition reaching for heights of expectation. Ambience, Classical, or both have found a trusted form together.
