Greg Fenton reviews Balaphonic – resolution revolutions – NuNorthern Soul
A summer breeze helps. So too does the gentle persuasion of an evergreen, ever ready infusion of diverse locations accompanied by hot rhythms and more than a sprinkle of joy which you can hear freely feeding throughout. A celebration of all that weaves in and out of Danny Ward’s clearly inquisitive mind-set transmitted here as Balaphonic. Nestling suitably within NuNorthern Soul roster this collection of explicitly emotional music sounds the roll call for fiesta from the melodic charges of the beautifully crafted Disorganics (All Strings Mix) to the languid intensity of Six Strings the album is a complete joy to behold.
Try the deliberately low-sung swing of Oxum feat. Ocean Waves Brasil to get lost in as voices pepper the pulsating drums and resolute swirl of pads. Plus the final number Bloco Manco serving up a wealth of fiery percussion augmented by a breath of space allowing for language and reflective conversation in the midst.
Release: April 25
