Greg Fenton reviews Bayonne – Filters – Nettwerk Music Group
Filters clashes joy with sorrow, heavy soaring melody and the expectation that things might indeed get better. Like the anthem you are yet to hear Unexpected opens the album up to an intense rush of feelings like the sun is always shinning for you.
Musically its big on a traditional spread of panoramic guitars, exhilarating keys and drums and breath of reverberating voices gathering momentum in heart-warming waves which inevitably wash over you. It’s about the craft of song, yes, but even more about the exuberance of emotion as it swells and recedes There’s a clear echo of the 1980s here, try Oxygen and the proceeding Forget for rolling bigtime rhythms and a raft of familiar memories. Perhaps I’m soaking up too much nostalgia but then I still love Tears for Fears.
