Magazine Sixty Music Review with Carrier

Greg Fenton reviews Carrier – Rhythm Immortal – Modern Love

Sounding like a glimpse of the future while the past crumbles, Carrier’s personal statements of intent explore the edges of time and space with a dignity and fierceness that are seemingly rare nowadays. I wouldn’t bother trying to categorise the music, as it forms shapes then dislocates into the air, leaving a searing, indelible impression behind. However, it does feel distinctly urban, like a concrete landscape full of human history, where walkways can seem foreboding and uncertain.

Listen to how the drums resonate on Outer Shell or the eerie stimulation of words crossing That Veil of Yours feat. Voice Actor or the Jamaican Dub-infused Wave After Wave, and the way simple circumstances are consumed, straightforward and crystal clear. It’s the directness and intentional atmosphere that create the greatest impact on this set of significant pieces of music. Perhaps all that’s lacking are scenes and film to match the echo of footsteps over the sonic terrain. Carriers’ debut album leaves you with Offshore feat. Memotone teasing you with an almost jazzy shuffle of drums alongside a whirl of provocative drones undulating, then complemented by a devastating, lone chord in the distance.
