Greg Fenton reviews César Merveille – CDV Whispers – Unreleased Ltd.
I missed this, but I’m glad I found it. There’s a casual dignity to César Merveille’s music that captures a sense of charm and intrigue while delivering intense energy, creating movement and emotion. Starting with the raw RS 40 and its rugged Chicago-style bassline, you soon encounter a series of subtle melodic bursts in the form of sweeter synthesizers, soaring into view, adding extra texture amid the probing layers; the additional rimshots are a superb musical addition.
The creative flair continues with Tacairo signalling the release of undulating acid pulses amid fiery snare drum patterns on this distinctive record of intent. However, it’s the warmer textures crisscrossing CDV Whispers that truly capture my attention. Again, fuelled by pertinent drums amidst an introspective meaning, as voices converge to form a linguistic intent, there is an almost cinematic, jazzy flavour alongside a rich melancholia flowing throughout the keys that is simply outstanding. Just as the cover Art is.
