Greg Fenton reviews David Moore – Graze the Bell – RVNG Intl.
Listening to David Moore play the piano is like a warm embrace gathering pace. Filtered through the lens of moments flickering across a past screening of events, while seeds are planted firmly in the here and now. Not living life in the moment, but much more significantly offering an informed, colourful vista with which to view it all across the pattern of sunrises and sunsets. The piano remains an instrument of eloquent storytelling in his hands.
Filled to the brim with happiness and sadness, the compositions are dignified yet loose enough to capture a sense of an improvised thought process, determining where each note might fall, and it is equally the case that spaces might evolve, as sometimes sounds are suspended, opening up questions. Try the exquisite series of keys populating the beautiful intensity of All This Has To Give.
Graze the Bell feeds the imagination royally, without exception, as cascading emotions rise and fall in a waterfall fed by the heightened mystery of being. It’s also very much about the time-honoured tradition of listening to an album in full, living the experience across the spectrum. Something akin to the pleasure of reading a book rather than flicking through social media while absorbing nothing in particular. Life is in resplendent technicolour.
