Magazine Sixty Music Review with Elsio Mancuso and Berto Pisano

Greg Fenton reviews Elsio Mancuso and Berto Pisano – Nude Per L’Assassino – Four Flies Records

Released to Italian cinemas in August 1975, Nude per l’assassino or charmingly in English, Strip Nude for Your Killer suggests a set of particular, peculiar circumstances. I haven’t watched the film yet, although the soundtrack alone is a brilliantly evocative series of scores that feel remarkably salient, remaining contemporary through the sheer force of composition by Berto Pisano and Elsio Mancuso. It’s also the depth of emotion on display here too from the gorgeous melancholy swoon of Occhi Senza Sguardo to the delicate edges of L’Atelier Dei Misteri this is an excellent variation of musical themes. Also of note is Edda Dell’Orso’s vocals, try the haunting refrains of Occhi Senza Sguardo (Voce e Organo).

Given the films unhinged subject matter there is more than enough subtly employed empathising aspects of loud and quiet behaviour, even moments of gentleness according to some of the music. There is also the huge added benefit of Trumpet blowing across the grooves, alongside the whirring organ typical of the time. All in all this proves to be a fabulous, richly atmospheric listen.
