Greg Fenton reviews Extrawelt – Cover Blown – Kompakt
Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe, aka Extrawelt, know all too well the inherent power that lies between drums and bass, shuffling a funky insistence alongside that dashing air of mystery supplied by a spread of exotic synths. Honey Hunter is all that and more, combining a heady mix of influences that simmer across the arrangement.
The darker shuffle and hot-wired syncopation of Hazinger follow suit, while the twang of double bass underpins the post-punk sensibility of Cover Blown, perfectly highlighting the diversity and creative skill at work here. The machine intensity of the twisted refrains of Black Badger supplies a commanding finish to this striking release, brimming with sounds, moods and rhythmic flair.
