Greg Fenton reviews f5point6 – A Random Sequence of Events – See Blue Audio
A random sequence of events is something everyone will understand in one shape or another feeding into sub-consciousness, surfacing in real time. Maybe it’s simply a pertinent description of life’s journey for mere mortals, or otherwise. As always within music there exists a certain number of creative thinkers who like to push the envelope rather than reply to what definitions of genre already exist. That’s what I admire about the pieces of musical pieces produced by f5point6 as the sound itself is the beating heart of the matter, the story being told. I like the fact that various reference points are readily touched upon and then remolded to fit into the character of the artist’s sonic sculptures. You can hear them for yourself and the resulting cast of light.
The music engages your mind in provocative ways as sounds gather pace across refrains like heat blowing hot and cool the air remains breathlessly exciting, and touching. Listen to the sheer beauty involved with I Never Got To Say as molecular impulses ignite (very) occasional percussion alongside the escape of thoughtful piano seemingly lost in a hazy distance. Or the more brittle intensity of Grey Clouds over Ramsgate as keys collate around a sea of themes pulling towards the tide of forever. Exiting the station is the shimmering title track itself, A Random Sequence of Events sparking memories and feelings of long-lost departure in the act, or art, of being human. An excellent album.
