Magazine Sixty Music Review with Franz Kirmann

Greg Fenton reviews Franz Kirmann – Almadies – Bytes

Experimenting with the concept of experimentation, Franz Kirmann’s stimulating infusion of sound into bliss demolishes the rule book of dull expectations. And guess what? There isn’t a drum roll anywhere. The drama lies in a curiosity of sonic movement created solely through authentic synthesisers and the organic twist of field recordings, all while maintaining a focus on musicality and the sincere emotion of shifting landscapes of notes.

Try the loosely sketched funkiness of Teranga to provide divine excitement. What happens next is anyone’s guess, or the deliberate intensity of Savana, whose brilliant rhythms invite a twisted shuffle. There is also a sense of awe throughout the Mahicao Museum, as well as its delightfully playful sequences. For contrast, more atmospheric numbers such as Lagon2 are included, along with the closing L’île, offering an explosion of quiet surprises to enjoy. If you are seeking music beyond the usual boundaries, this is mercifully creative and radical in ways that ignite sparks.
