Greg Fenton reviews Giuliano Sorgini – Savana Selvaggia – Four Flies Records
Giuliano Sorgini’s inspired album soaks up the sights and sounds of the African continent and transforms them into an otherworldly experience, rich in rhythm and expression. Originally conceived as music for television documentaries in the mid-1970s, this collection of previously unreleased pieces now provides a fascinating companion to the earlier Africa Oscura.
It’s a journey through unusual landscapes, where an air of mystery shapes the music in wonderfully evocative ways. Try the atmospheric opening of the album’s title track to set the mood, while the contrasting exuberance of Caccia tropicale injects a burst of energy, much as Arabian Safari does with its stabbing bass and whirring synthesisers.
The album’s evocative atmosphere continues through the horns of Zebre, the breathy melodies of Alba sulla savana and the swirling melancholy that colours I misteri del mondo.
Ultimately, Savana Selvaggia is a fascinating collection of cinematic soundscapes, where rhythm, atmosphere and mystery combine to create something distinctly thrilling.
