Greg Fenton reviews goat (JP) – Orin (Ricardo Villalobos Variation – Latency
I’m new to the gently epic, meditative yet sonically provocative Orin by goat (JP), with its chorus of chiming sequences, created for Cindy van Acker’s dance piece Without References. An absorbing, stunning experience you can witness below.
Ricardo Villalobos offers a superlative interpretation, thankfully almost impossible to pin down because of its shape-shifting structures and displaced cultural architecture. While the bells remain a prominent focus, the augmentation of voices and vocals, treated and expanded, marks the territory with particular force. That, of course, is matched by the rugged rhythms of the sonically resilient bassline. Over nine minutes, movement-like episodes populate seconds, rising and falling into a natural disposition. Moments come and go. The piece stops abruptly. Throughout, thoughts are explored, lent weight by the sincerity of creative imagination in a language we can all converse in. A second, anticipated interpretation of Factory is due next.
