Greg Fenton reviews Guentner + Spieth – Conversion – Affin Music
At the risk of repeating myself, music inspired by uncharted explorations using drones to craft overlapping atmospheres needs to be quite exceptional or specific to stand out and be heard nowadays, given the vast number of similar compositions. Fortunately, the sounds and emotions within Guentner + Spieth’s sonic possibilities surprise you with an endless shift in poise and direction as intensity merges with a darker soulfulness, inviting you into each layered space. You can sense the hints and explanations as they flow through tracks like Cipher. If ever there was a case for deep listening, this is it.
It’s not solely about a single set of emotional circumstances; listen to the uplifting flow throughout Vortex, or the suspension of dreamy reality in Morphia. While the brutal yet smoky single drum beat underpinning Chrysalis is captivating, it perfectly encapsulates the smouldering array of pads it supports. Nevertheless, all of the music here sounds powerful, as if the stereo field isn’t quite wide enough to contain it. Perhaps it feels like time is running out, and there’s a rush to explore as many questions as possible. Let’s hear what the answers might be.
