Magazine Sixty Music Review with Josh Smith

Greg Fenton reviews Josh Smith – Etruscan Vase EP – flurt.

Josh Smith achieves that rare feat of blending a diverse array of sounds and making sense of them. From energetic drums to constantly expanding keys bouncing across the stereo field to illuminating vocal samples taken from forgotten film. The music is informed and temptingly emotive.

Beginning with the fiery title track, then exploring the deeper Room 317 featuring voices lifted from one of my favourite film noirs to the enchanting, imaginary world of Placebo, all three numbers resolutely hit the mark.

Nath. reworks the ceramic reference of the Etruscan Vase, creating a rich atmosphere with whirring drones and cool, purposeful drum patterns. Cora M delivers a great take on Placebo with creative sound effects that work up the rhythm section, dancing along the lines of intriguing intensity.
