Greg Fenton reviews LUM – Golden Daughters of The Golden Cave EP – Maison D’Etre

Does it feel like fate when the first ten seconds feel exhilarating, igniting every possibility rather than dulling the nerves with the boredom of endless nostalgia? Besides being graced with such an excellent title, Golden Daughters of The Golden Cave lasts in the region of fourteen minutes, and not one of them isn’t required. It begins with uncomplicated yet invaluable percussion, building anticipation as voices collide. Further drums ignite the rhythm section – like every hit has its own reason for being – alongside whirring bass and echoes reaching out to the future. In a sense, not much actually happens, but listen closer as everything does.

Ohm Hourani then rearranges the rhythms, causing the tension to spin out of control as sound effects sound heavy and tempting. Again, fuelled by drums and offset by a wealth of atmospheric pulses, this seeks out the majesty of dub in truly hypnotic ways. Anthony Middleton completes the release via an injection of melody as chords warm the soul amid crisp percussion and drum machines exercising their prowess primed together with absorbing hints of acid and spirits elevating. Again, par excellence.
