Greg Fenton reviews Margaux Gazur – Blurred Memories LP – Smallville Records

Dancing along a fine line of musical intrigue and the free-form rewiring of history, Margaux Gazur’s brilliant new album soothes the soul while quickly demonstrating the ability to fuse invention and communication into one message. Drawing on a raft of various influences, the sounds incorporate hints of Detroit just as they wash the senses in European glamour. Try, Morning Ride with its invigorating bass tones and heavy four-on-the-floor drums as keys melt form into the atmosphere for a possibility.

The dark brushes of Su Phu feel as deep as you can fathom, allowing for the relief of jazzier percussion somewhere along the mid-point on this revitalising journey into deep pulses and accompanying voices suggesting alternative options. The likewise excellent Blurred Memories does likewise, again channelling the drama of low-end drums alongside wayward keys, although this time with the ever-present feeling of a joyous refrain.

There are plenty of lighter pieces to explore too such as the delicate melodies of Someday and the carefully crafted analogue expression of This Is Always. These pieces engage beautifully with more intimate moments, proving again the ready availability of the celebration of rhythm as it does the future-gazing possibilities of synthesisers.
