Greg Fenton reviews Markus Guentner – On Brutal Soil We Grow – Affin
Listening to Markus Guentner’s On Brutal Soil, We Grow shift shapes and forms is much like watching the clouds and the interspersed tones of a blue sky drift past my winter-morning window. Like the formations as they gather and disperse without any apparent structure, the music Markus Guentner has composed is both captivating and personal, conveying a heartfelt presence to the listener through a series of undulating synthesised drones and voice-like motifs, capturing humanity and storytelling most wonderfully. Perfectly realised on the shimmering ascent and descent of A Place Between (listen below).
It’s by no means all considered introspection as the beautiful curves of The Silver Path lift the spirit skyward, much as the rousing Wall Of Thorns does. Sitting between the compassion of solitude and the hot energy of sonic release, this series of compositions offers a telling journey through the senses that becomes more rewarding with each subsequent listen.
