Magazine Sixty Music Review with Masahiro Takahashi

Greg Fenton reviews Masahiro Takahashi – In Another – Telephone Explosion Records

Such a magnificent album, brimming with poise, character and full of the deft touch of Jazz. Experience the intimacy of the opening: I’m your mirror, and its breathy refrains painted by conversational saxophone, warm piano, the chime of expressive vibes and sensual double bass, as if they were tailor-made for each other.

The edgy landscapes of Queen West Butterfly are then complemented by crunchy drum machines and a full cinema of uncertainty, sprinkled with tastefully haunting vocals. Meanwhile, Dreamies contrasts by omitting drums but features the defining impact of horns and voices, playing with care and attention. However, don’t miss out on the collaboration of vocals, emotionally unrestrained plucked guitar, and all of the album’s resonant qualities on the subsequent No Kings, whatever you do.

The album unfolds with an exploration of themes and the pleasure of lush vocal harmonies or the flickering of jazzy impressions, such as on the signature nighttime eloquence, Useless Tree. Hints of Latin and a world of celluloid also appear as if by magic throughout, with a selection of skilled musicians making their presence warmly felt.

This is a remarkable release in many ways, fearless in its expression of musicality and the lure of surprise. In Another, celebrates the pleasures of genuine music and the emotions and atmospheres it can evoke. Full of the language of notes and chords, it’s also a highly charged, enjoyable listen.
