Greg Fenton reviews Red Axes – Red Box – 20:20 Vision Recordings
Red Axes have a rare ability to make electronic music feel vividly alive, and this release channels that energy with creative impulses sparking in all directions. Their palette of diverse sounds gives each moment an unpredictable edge, lending the trilogy’s opening chapter a sense of mystery and momentum.
Four tracks shape the release for Ralph Lawson’s long-standing label, beginning with the heavy, invitingly propulsive Red Boxes. Its Detroit‑leaning Acid bass and tightly moulded drums wrap around atmospheric keys with striking coherence. Eko follows, driven by punchy drum machines and a flicker of synthesised melody that shifts the mood into sharper, more angular territory.
Random Factor, aka Carl Finlow, reimagines Red Boxes into something deeper and more spacious, opening out the track’s emotional core in a standout remix. FTS then closes the release with another notably driving bassline, vocal fragments that push a pointed message, and exciting array of fiery percussion that hints at the wealth of ideas still to come.
