Greg Fenton reviews Scanner – The Prophet
The second production from Scanner this week is simply because this effortless, thoughtful piece of music delights the circuits and excites the senses. Based on G-force’s recreation of the 1978 Prophet 5 synthesiser, it may have started life as a playful idea and is now a fully realised set of music in its own right. While I’ve perhaps completely misquoted the adage: It’s not what you have, but what you do with it, or simply made it up, it certainly feels relevant here.
Four numbers make up the release, each exploring the avenues the machine presents while remaining vital and contemporary. The synth’s history is an achievement in itself; its sounds resonate across the decades. I like crunchy drumming, smouldering voices, and the big sounds of Cities Down to the Last Radio best.
