Greg Fenton reviews Scartip – Clones – Hypercolour
In many ways, it is an exceptional production because the music blends elements of danger and a feast full of hidden surprises, disorienting expectations, while hitting straight at the core. The chiming percussion is electrifying, creating tension and shuffling funk equally, while the rugged bassline is rigorous and unforgiving. All sound is focused on a mission. Occasional warmth is added by stabbing chords and a twisted reworking of a horn-like sample, which opens the track – interpret it as you will. But it’s that level of thrilling uncertainty that makes it so brilliant here.
The likewise excellent The Chef is a reference to something or someone carrying a weight of expectation. Again, this breaks convention through a succession of barriers combining an illicit number of styles, ideas, and radical imposition into the discourse of dance that we could do with a lot more of. This time the detail is in the crisp, driving drums and caustic stabs and voices.
