Greg Fenton reviews Those Who Walk Away – Afterlife Requiem – Constellation
Compelling the sense of the ethereal and that of loss, Those Who Walk Away aka Matthew Patton, alongside Andy Rudolph and Paul Corley on co-production and sound design, honours remembrance with a series of pieces that weigh heavily on the heart. In this instance, dedicated to the work and life of Jóhann Jóhannsson.
Heavenly reflections amidst choir-like waves of intensity envelop your reactions in real time. Not an easy listen necessarily, but one that will not be forgotten quickly. The crashing stabs and moody pads surrounding Memorial Environment #4 create a particular effect, with an environment of sounds that feel musical yet are not straightforward.
The music is personal, and you can evidence that too. Almost like it should be referenced in hushed tones, which is why too many words might be too much in describing the experience. Try, Eighth Dergaded Hymn for tearing strings and broken relocation of fragmentary memory. As if you were there and then weren’t.
