Greg Fenton reviews Verses GT – LUCKYME®
The music created through the collaboration between Nosaj Thing and Jacques Greene pulses with a sense of musical artistry, combined with an emotional approach that resonates throughout each of these skillfully produced tracks. Each piece sets its own rhythm, establishing a particular atmosphere and meaning that defines it. Fragment begins the discourse by highlighting a haunting beauty free from restriction, followed by the dark noir of Unknown with its own driving, smouldering drums and bass to develop the story. The single Your Light (ft. George Riley) echoes that same theme, this time with the added warmth of vocals and an illuminating sequence of shimmering, ever-expanding synths.
Left, is a gorgeous piece of music in its own right, rich in mysterious atmosphere, fuelled by intriguing percussive patterns and a fragile swirl of defining ambience. While, Wan takes a moodier turn, crossing brooding low-end together with edgy, textured voices, simplifying expression down to a T.
Contrasting those impressions is the powerful Angels (ft. TYSON), which feels even more impactful despite its slower pace, thanks to its grittier, low-slung drum patterns that highlight the innate yearning soulfulness of the vocals, as well as the distinct, intentionally rugged selection of club-oriented beats forming around Intention. The album concludes on a divine high with Vision + Television, evoking grains of memory and thoughts of reflective intensity that resonate perfectly with the times.
