Magazine Sixty Music Review with Viclan

Greg Fenton reviews Viclan – Checking In – R&S Records

Calvin Whittaker’s deeply informed, deceptively intricate Checking In repeatedly slices speech, looping it into a frenzy of delicious/delirious possibility. Reminiscent of Steve Reich’s It’s Gonna Rain from 1965 in the way music evolves and reinvents itself over time, it likewise begins at one point and ends at another as the vocals fire off into a perspective, altering direction. Spun over tough tribal drums, its seeming simplicity underplays a resolute hypnosis that works like an unruly dream penetrating sensory overdrive. Breathless and brilliant.

Next is his brilliant remix of Casual Violence’s Briefly Sexual – two excellent titles if ever there was one – which twirls teasing bass, keys and further chorus of voices around straight four-four beats amid exalted heavenly release. Perfectly pitched.
