s t a r g a z e – One – Transgressive

If life isn’t about stepping sideways into the vast unknown then it can be about boredom and conformity. This beautifully executed album composed by a creative amalgamation of Tyondai Braxton (Battles), Nik Colk Void (Factory Floor / Carter Tutti Void), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Arone Dyer (Buke+Gase) and Aart Strootman sounds quietly reassured and robustly enjoyable. Written for stargaze who then combine elements of more traditional, classical musicality alongside an intriguing glimpse of futuristic impressions the opening ‘Metaphor’ feels like you are dancing around a silent movie blazing with colourful escapism. From there on in melodies of one desciption or another accompany a variety of invigorating rhythms, which on ocassion break down into a haunting memory of a possible past. And by the time you land on Recollection Pulse there is a definite edge to the air as tense keys pulse while strings stretch out the smoky atmospheres into an ocean of celluloid. Order is almost restored by the final number Descend playing out as a thought-provoking, emotionally rich piece of music featuring a breath of wind instruments that subsequently compound One as a most valuable, informing listen.
