Magazine Sixty Music Review with Ruth Mascelli and Mary Hanson Scott

Greg Fenton reviews Ruth Mascelli and Mary Hanson Scott – Esoteric Lounge Music Now – Disciples

Fast is good. You’ll fall head over heels for this selection of inspired sounds, as if you were born for it. It blends jazz, eccentricity, song, and rhythmic or cosmic expansion. All these elements clash in a riot of colour that may be hard to define clearly, but offers an exceptional listening experience in energy and a warm human touch. This isn’t surprising, given the creative tones used throughout much of the music. Try the second track, A Lover’s Theory Of Value, featuring Ruth Mascelli’s captivating vocals for a truly heavenly experience release.

By the time you land on the smoky swirl of anticipation offered by Conversation Pit, night falls alongside an escape into after-dark discourse driven by the gentle whir of drum machines and breathy saxophone. That emotional pulse and the reverberating sounds of keys slipping away denote the beautiful yet caustic Blue Of Noon. I’m choosing numbers at random here as they’re all notable in their own right. Although, I’m not so sure about the cover of Laura Branigan’s Self Control.

The mixture of everything feels at its best during those delirious, smouldering moments about noir and the touch of excess falling between cracks in the night sky as the wonderfully atmospheric Encore drifts off into the ether.
